Are The Precons A Good Value
Commander precons are always good value when they first release. You typically get several Commander staples in them, which add up to what you paid for it. Theyre also good fun and a nice place to start for new players.
If youre looking to get both of the new precons, is it better to purchase them individually or as a set? It really depends on where youre purchasing it. The price of Magic cards can vary from location to location, both in-person and online. So make sure you run the math before purchasing to get the most value.

Magic: The Gathering Commander Legends Arm For Battle

The commander format is one of the most fun and popular ways of playing Magic the Gathering. Mostly this is because you can play with more than two players, it allows for a large number of cards to be used in your deck. Magic: The Gathering Commander Legends Arm for Battle is a pre-built deck of a 100 cards intended for this style of play and its a pretty sweet. The deck includes reprints of cards that have been difficult to get for a while.
This is an epic white/red deck. Partially because its full of elephant themed cards and other cards that simply go bang. The commander card itself, Wyleth Soul of Steel is not only unstoppable , he also draws more cards if he attacks when equipped. And this huge deck has a lot of equipment. Youll be bolting on items throughout play, steadily growing more and more powerful.
Cards of note include Swiftfoot Boots, which gives your commander Haste and Hexproof, which makes them hard to hit and immune to summoning sickness. Relentless assault effectively lets you attack twice with all your summoned creatures. Boros Charm gives you multiple options, all of which let you hit hard and Blackblade Reforged can make you nearly unstoppable if played toward the end of the game. Overall, they are some great cards here and its a very well-considered deck.
If youre looking to get into Magic the Gathering, this is a solid place to start.
Ways To Upgrade Arm For Battle
Next is the fun part. Ive found five reasonable directions to upgrade this deck. They are as follows:
You will notice that some of those ways are similar to each other and might have overlapping cards. The reason I include them as different decks, however, is because the goals of each of them are unique enough to have different identities, even if they are similar.

Arm For Battle: New Commander Cards
One of the most exciting parts of these preconstructed Commander decks is the three exclusive new cards in each one.
The commander of Arm for Battle is Wyleth, Soul of Steel. Wyleth is arguably one of the most exciting Boros cards weve had this year, and its because he can draw cards. Yes, cards plural. When Wyleth attacks, you draw a card for each aura and equipment attached to him.Thats a really good rate, and as you dont even need to do combat damage to draw those cards, its easy enough to achieve. Its the Boros voltron-matters card weve been crying out for for years, and having trample, too? Well, I know Im hyped. Evasion on a voltron commander is essential in my eyes, and its one of the reasons I docked a few points from Akiri, Fearless Voyager in my deep dive.
The other two cards are, rather predictably, an aura and an equipment. Blazing Sunsteel is a way to punish people who block to avoid commander damage, and with the right damage doublers in play can lead to some serious damage. If you have, say, Fiery Emancipation and Brash Taunter on the board, the damage dealt to Wyleth will magnify every time its reflected.
Whats Notable About This Sets Decks

As mentioned earlier, these new precons seem to mimic some of the mechanics that weve seen with Zendikar Rising. Specifically, landfall and equipment. If youve already opened up a bunch of sealed ZNR, you might have some easy upgrades for these precons on hand.
Its also worth noting that these precons only have a couple cards from the new Commander Legends set. If youre looking to open up some of that sweet sweet new stuff, youll have to stick to the boosters.

Upgrading Arm For Battle
Now, Wyleth, Soul of Steel has a lot of potential, and I know many players first instinct will be to upgrade this precon into a deadly, efficient machine. Unfortunately, to do that in Boros often means spending a fair amount the best equipment and the best white cards are generally quite expensive. So, Im going to be budget-conscious when it comes to upgrading this build. The total cost of the precon, plus any upgrades, should come out at no more than $100. This is around $10 more than Scott spent on upgrading Reap the Tides, but a Simic creature-based deck will always be easier to upgrade than a more niche strategy, especially when that niche strategy involves auras and equipment.The good Boros cards have always been notoriously expensive, and though we arent springing for some of those top end cards here such as Land Tax, Stoneforge Mystic, and Sword of Feast and Famine we do need to be able to grab a couple of the more crucial cards for this strategy: think Sword of the Animist, Puresteel Paladin, and Sevinnes Reclamation. They do add up quickly!
Early on in the upgrade process, I ruled out leaning too heavily on auras as a theme. The best recursion cards for auras are very expensive, in the case of Replenish. Additionally, the deck is just going to function better as an equipment-focused deck.

Arm For Battle: Deck Review
Arm for Battle seeks to provide a stepping stone to a first voltron deck. For many Arena players who are fans of bogles style gameplay, or who like suiting up a Snapdax, Apex of the Hunt in Brawl, it seems like a solid way to get into the Commander format.
The game plan revolves around attaching auras and equipment to the creatures that benefit from them, swinging for damage, and using disruptive and controlling instants to prevent damage, protect your board, and otherwise stay in the game. The key cards for this strategy are:
The deck has a good number of staple voltron cards, and for those who havent built Boros Voltron before, its a great place to pick up cards that will see play in a number of different builds. Most of the cards in this deck see some amount of play at varying power levels in Commander, and most of the cards are good to own and form a solid deck-building base.
The majority of the bloat, or filler, is in the equipment. Not all equipment is created equally, and unfortunately, the better equipment tends to be expensive enough that it would significantly bump both the price of the power level of this deck. I dont envy the team trying to balance voltron at a pre-constructed level, as its very easy to just run away with a game with the right draws.

Commander Theme And Strategy
Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait is a landfall-focused deck looking to gain an advantage off playing a lot of lands or getting big creatures out and overpowering your opponents. It has some good ramp, some good removal, and with Aesi allowing you to play additional lands and draw cards, thatll get you where you want to be even quicker. This deck will start off a little slow as it gets setup, but once it gets going itll really start swinging.
I think this deck will do well in most Commander play groups, as a lot of games can be fairly long. The top end of this deck will keep it in the game. Along with some good interactive counterspells and decent removal, itll be fun to play.

Welcome back to another article where we discuss a Commander pre-constructed deck. Commander Legends is nearly upon us and in addition to countless new commanders, we are getting two new decks. In this Arm for Battle Upgrade Guide, Ill talk about the red-white deck and 5 different ways to upgrade it.
Ill discuss which cards to remove and which cards to add. Ill also highlight some of the cards from Commander Legends, which can make the deck better.
Whats In The New Commander Legend Decks

Meet Aesi and Wyleth, your Commander Legends precon commanders!
Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait from Reap the Tides is a Simic commander following up on Zendikar Risings landfall theme. You get to play extra lands and draw extra cards for doing so! Definitely two things we love doing in Magic: getting ahead in mana, and having more cards.
Wyleth, Soul of Steel from Arm for Battle is a very Boros commander, to no surprise, and is going to be a very combat-focused play style. ZNR also had a warrior and equipment theme, so this seems to continue that idea and encourages a Voltron strategy .

Who These Decks Are For
Precon Commander decks are typically made as fun, synergistic decks that both new and experienced players can enjoy.
For new players, these decks are a good place to start. They work well together, theyre typically cheaper than designing and purchasing your own Commander deck, and theyre primed to upgrade if you want to go that route.
For experienced players, you can try something new, get a new concept for you to upgrade around, and grab a couple format staples that typically accompany these precon decks.
$200 Arm For Battle Upgrade
The $200 upgrade shifts the precon towards a more pure Equipment Voltron strategy. We’ve started picking up the remaining best Equipments like Sword of Sinew and Steel and best Equipment support cards like Stoneforge Mystic. We’re also making Wyleth far more deadly with extra combat spells like Seize the Day. The Equipment archetype is still a very expensive one though so we can’t fit all the staples even with $200, but this is an excellent version nonetheless.

Commander Legends Upgrade Guide: Arm For Battle

Commander Legends brings with it two new preconstructed decks: Reap the Tides, a Simic sea-themed deck, and Arm for Battle, a Boros aura/equipment voltron deck. If you know me at all, youll know I jumped at the chance to review the latter, and so without further ado, lets dive on into this Boros Bonanza.
What To Take Out
Get rid of all of the Auras. They distract from the equipment focus, and all have effects that could be replaced by an equipment that does a similar thing.
Also, this deck contains an equipment that you will have to make your own decision about. Sunforger is an incredibly powerful card, but it requires you to build around it a little bit more than other equipment.
What I mean by that is you will have to include a package of instants that can be fetched out by Sunforgers ability. If you want to do that, feel free. Otherwise, consider cutting this card.

Commander Legends Vs Other Commander Precons
WotC has seemingly increased their focus on creating Commander products. The majority of Commander products have typically come out with either a Standard-legal set or as the years Commander deck . Now, with Commander Legends, theyre giving us a couple extra precons. I dont know if this will be a continued trend, but at the very least it gives you more product to choose from.
A common theme with any precon Commander deck WotC releases is that their archetypes will typically mirror the mechanics of the sets that its released around. For example, Zendikar Rising has a landfall theme, so WotC released a Commander precon deck based on landfall with Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor at the head. The Commander Legends precons hit this mark as well.
These decks are overall pretty on par compared to previous years. We get a couple new decks to choose from and they introduce a couple new legendaries, but dont have a huge impact on the format.

Okay fine here’s an alternative to Kaldra for you non-believers. I’ve bumped up the amount of Equipment and Auras in the deck, added more ramp with cards like Knight of the White Orchid, Everflowing Chalice, and Dowsing Dagger, added more card draw with Akiri, Fearless Voyager, Puresteel Paladin, and Mask of Memory, and generally increased the speed and efficiency of the deck:
