As the old saying goes, “there are two types of concrete decks. One has a crack, and the other will have a crack.”
In our work, we have seen more cracks in concrete decks that one could count. Early in the life of a concrete deck, cracks can occur when concrete expands and contracts with weather conditions, and when expansion joints are not well positioned. Cracks in concrete decks and patios can also appear when the soil underneath the concrete slab erodes. This erosion can be the result of settling soil over time, water movement, nearby construction or more. Due to its stiffness, concrete does not flex with the changing ground conditions. If the slab can’t carry its own weight in a section, a crack occurs. Expansion joints reduce the likelihood of cracks, but cracks can’t be completely avoided in most concrete patios or decks.
Most home and property owners are unhappy with traditional ways to “fix” cracks: mostly the cracks are patched up with filler material. This material – if used correctly – may prevent further cracking by keeping water and ice out of the crack. However, further cracking due to soil and gravel shifting underneath can’t be prevented by this method. Also, a 100% texture and color match is usually not possible, and so patching up cracks becomes very unsightly. Oftentimes a patched up crack looks just as bad – or worse – than the crack itself!

Then, I like to actually sponge off the mortar joint itself. This will smooth down any trow marks and leave you with a much more consistent looking mortar joint.
Sponging down the joint itself will also fill minor gaps that you may leave behind with the trow. Look, Im pretty good with a trowbut still, little tiny spots can get left, little voids, about one quarter the size of a match headlittle spots, usually along the edge of the stone, not in the middle of the joint. These are spots where water can infiltrate, and cause a mortar joint to fail, sometimes within just a few years. Worse still, that water could even get underneath your flagstones, cause thing to pop up and come loose.
Im not really sure how many masons use a sponge technique like I do. What I do know however is that when I come in to repair these jobs, I always find little tiny gaps in the mortarlittle tiny gaps like the ones that I myself sometimes leave behind with my trowbut that I always correct, with the sponge.
***again, the sponge is used a bit less, if you go with a super-dry method.

Do It Repair A Flagstone Walkway

To replace missing stones, youll need stones of similar size and thickness to what already exists. You may have to do some chipping to make the new pieces fit the voids. Do this slowly and whittle away from the edge so you dont remove too much material.
Once the stones are dry fit, youre ready to mix up the mortar. Were using a pre-mixed mortar that only requires the addition of water. Remove the stones and apply some mortar each location. Then replace the stones, pressing them into the mortar.
To replace missing mortar around the existing stones, mix the mortar a little thinner so it runs into the cracks when applied to the joints. As the mortar begins to dry, youll want to clean it off the face of the stones using a mason brush or a sponge along with a light spray from a garden hose.
When the mortar is completely dry, clean the entire surface with a masonry or stone cleaning solution. This is necessary to prepare it for the application of a sealer.
Applying the sealer will protect the stones and the mortar so that the walkway remains safe and attractive for a long time.

Flagstone steps, walkways and patios need occasional maintenance and repair, usually to renew the mortar between the stones or in the case of stones laid without mortar, to level those that have tilted or sunk.
The work is not complicated, but it can be strenuous if moving stones is required.
Areas of cracked mortar between flagstones should be repaired.
Moisture seeping into cracks and repeatedly freezing and thawing will eventually cause further cracking, and weeds sprouting in the fissures can do the same thing.
For protection when working with mortar and stone, wear goggles and thick gloves.
To repair cracked mortar, use a cold chisel and either a large ball-peen hammer or a small sledgehammer to chip away the damaged pieces. Strike with light to moderate blows. Stop when you reach sound mortar. Then brush the area clean with a whisk broom.
Soak the chiseled area and surrounding stones with water from a garden hose while you prepare fresh mortar for a patch. Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer’s directions with a mason’s trowel or large putty knife.
Properly mixed mortar should be neither soggy nor crumbly. One way to test it is to slice a small mound, about two cups’ worth, down the center. If the edges of the two slices collapse, the mixture is too wet if they crumble, the mixture is too dry.

I am guessing that you live in a climate that has multiple freeze/thaw cycles. everything moves with the weather conditions – expanding and contracting. additionally, if water somehow finds its way into the mortar or stone, it could expand when frozen and aid in the hairline cracks in your mortar.
I would repair the joints the best I could, adding a liquid latex to the mortar mix. this will allow more flexibility. then I would seal the whole thing with a waterproofer like: “Gloss n’ Guard” or “Weather Seal Siloxane”
this will keep the water out of your flagstone and joints.
