The Fall Of Lord Konda

There are always going to be ripe targets for Chapter I of this Saga. Exiling a creature is such a strong ability that The Fall of Lord Konda might be worthwhile just for that. It gives us more. Chapter II sure makes those Spelltable games cleaner by giving everyone back all their permanents. The 1/3 creature you get after the transformation isnt going to win any contests, but it replaces itself when it dies.

Fable Of The Mirror Breaker Is A Slower Yet Useful Way To Get A Kiki

If one wanted to run Kiki-Jiki in their Commander deck, they should just run Kiki-Jiki. If they wanted a second Kiki-Jiki like effect , Fable of the Mirror Breaker is a decent option. The first chapter of this saga provides a goblin shaman that produces treasures on the attack. The second chapter allows the controller to ditch two cards to draw two. The third finally transforms the saga into the Reflection of Kiki-Jiki.

This creature requires an additional one mana to duplicate a creature, and that hinders its efficacy. It being a transformed creature already prevented an infinite combo with Restoration Angel, but the mana requirement does slow Reflection of Kiki-Jiki down a lot. That said, there are far worse red cards out there, and a duplication effect is always at least a little useful.

Inventive Iteration Can Trip Up Opponents

Inventive Iteration is another interesting saga to come out of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. It bounces a creature or planeswalker upon entering the battlefield. With the second lore counter, it either returns an artifact from the graveyard to hand or draws a card.

However, the true power of Inventive Iteration comes from the creature on the back: Living Breakthrough. This creature makes it so that, whenever its controller casts a spell, their opponents can’t cast spells of the same mana value until the next turn. With enough spells, this can be downright devastating for opponents.

Intro Or Full Versions

You probably know that Wizards released intro Commander decks in the past. These decks had lower power level and lower price. For an example, you can take a look at Kaldheim Commander decks.

However, the vast majority of the time, WotC release fully powered Commander decks. The most recent ones were Crimson Vow Commander decks. They have higher power level, more powerful reprints, and have the standard price for Commander precons.

So, the big question is: Are Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander decks intro decks or the full versions?

While it hasnt been confirmed so far, the Neon Dynasty Commander decks will probably be fully powered. This is based on the fact that we didnt have an intro Commander deck since Kaldheim, back in February 2021. It looks like Wizards are slowly phasing out this product.

This would mean that you can expect powerful decks with 15 exclusive new cards in each one and with exciting reprints. The new cards will be thematically tied to Kamigawa, but the reprints can be from anywhere.

Fantastic Commander Decks To Go Big With Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Sheldon Menery continues building Commander MTG decks with Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, this time offering two lists designed to create big creatures and even bigger fun.

Rolling up our sleeves to brew with the pulse-pounding Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty continues! This set is so chock-full of exciting cards and spicy commanders that I just cant help myself. I built two versions of Isshin, Two Heavens as One last time, one targeted at playing well within my own group and one quite a bit spicier.

The Samurai Commander: Building With Isshin, Two Heavens As One

Im going to port that model of building to each new set. Ill take the commander I like the most and build one to play with the rest of the RC and one for higher-powered play.

That piece also debuted the concept of Pepper Tiers. Ill tag each new deck I build with a spice level to demonstrate what kind of group it might play in. Its not a definitive rating system, just something to give an idea of where the deck stands. The Pepper Tier List looks like this:

Red Bell: A little sweet, a Red Bell deck is easily digestible by nearly everyone.

Jalapeno: Just a small amount of heat, but something that lots of people can take without too much trouble.

Habanero: Youll need a fair amount of heat tolerance for a Habanero Tier deck. It will come at you fast with lots of flavor, but then pack a back-end flamethrower. This one is where you start warning people.

Nashi Moon Sages Scion

The simple part is that you get to exile opponents cards. The cooler part is that you might even be able to cast stuff. Odds are that someone will have a land, so youll have that as well. The payment of life is a feature, not a bug. It allows you to cast an extra spell or two. Early in the game, you probably dont even need the ninjutsu ability in order to find someone to profitably attack. The card just seems like a big flavor win, too.

Concord With The Kami

I love the broad nature of this payoff for going with modified as a theme, as it encourages you to go into at least two of the three options if you really want good value. I would say you probably need to be doing Auras in addition to one of the other options, since drawing a card is the best of these payoffs, and just hitting one of the three consistently isnt enough to justify a four-mana enchantment. I am glad to see it triggering in the end step, though, as that makes it harder to get wrecked on your investment than if it was an upkeep trigger.

Junji The Midnight Sky

Recover from Damnation Dragon is here at your service. I really cant see too many situations in which Im using the discard mode of the death trigger, instead opting to lose the two life in order to dump some large non-Dragon onto the battlefield. Coupled with the outstanding triggered ability, Junji being a five mana 5/5 flyer with menace makes it nearly everything I want in a Magic card.

The Reality Chip, illustrated by Campbell White

The best part of a new set is in figuring out which cards go into your existing decks. When its a set as amazeballs as Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, you know youre going to have plenty to do. The good news is that its fun, because you get to comb through a few hundred cards to find both the ones everyones talking about and the hidden gems.

The trouble, of course, is finding room in those decks. Most of them were designed to be decent at the mid-range of Commander power, which is the zone I like to play in. There are a few that are spicier, but my target game is the one thats going to go double-digit turns with no one threatening to win before about Turn 6. If you like a faster game, thats great for me, I like one to unfold a little more slowly. For those of you just joining this conversation, I also make the self-limiting promise that Im going to put only one copy of any new card into the suite. When building new decks, Im free to use these cards , but for now I get only onewhich is going to sometimes mean tough choices.

I went into this exercise of updating my now-61 decks thinking thered be around 30 cards to put into them between the main set and Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty Commander. Lets see how accurate my prediction was.

Invoke The Ancients Drops In Two Powerful Spirit Tokens

Invoke the Ancients is one of the cycle of “Invoke” cards from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. There is an “Invoke” card for each of the five colors, and Invoke the Ancients is among the better ones. It creates two 4/5 Spirit tokens, each of which can be given a vigilance counter, a reach counter, or a trample counter.

Five mana for two 4/5 creatures is quite a decent gain. It’s even more powerful in a token-themed deck, which can easily duplicate the spirit tokens with populate-type effects as well as the ever-useful Doubling Season and Parallel Lives.

Notable Cards: Reprints And $$

While Buckle Up doesnt come with many costly reprints, it offers some good cards to add to your collection and some mighty Commander-only cards.

Mirage Mirror comes back with a sorely needed reprint. This went under the radar for a while in Commander, at least in my groups. Its also the priciest reprint in the set.

The priciest card in this deck is Swift Reconfiguration. It can set up an infinite combo with Devoted Druid. All you need to do is enchant Druid and then tap it for then put a -1/-1 counter on it. The negative counter doesnt do anything since its not a creature anymore, but it gets to untap and you can repeat this cycle indefinitely.

Another notable card is Drumbellower, which is excellent for any deck. I think it fits more into a green-based deck like Seedborn Muse, but it works well here because you can crew all your vehicles and then still have blockers.

Imposter Mech is an excellent card, though not nearly as good as the others. Its basically a vehicle version of Phantasmal Image without the downside of being an illusion.

Explosive Singularity Could Be A Monster In A Token And/or Spell Build

Explosive Singularity is a particularly impressive spell from the new set. It deals 10 to any target for eight generic mana and two red mana. That’s a lot, but it can be reduced by tapping any number of creatures. This makes it a frightening prospect already in a token deck. However, a spell build could exploit this card further through copying and recursion.

Young Pyromancer, Shark Typhoon, and Murmuring Mystic are just a few cards that produce tokens for casting non-creature spells. Any of these could aid in drastically lowering the cost of Explosive Singularity.

Thundering Raiju Has Massive Potential In A +1/+1 Counter

Thundering Raiju is a four mana 3/3 creature with haste that puts a +1/+1 counter on any creature and then zaps each opponent for each modified creature on its side of the field. Any deck that focuses on distributing +1/+1 counters amongst their creatures gains a powerhouse in Thundering Raiju.

Of course, there is no shortage of such decks, with Animar, Soul of Elements, Halana and Alena, Partners, and the new Chishiro, the Shattered Blade all being quite good choices for a red commander that benefits from +1/+1 counters.

Myojin Of Grim Betrayal

This is definitely a self-mill payoff, with the caveat that you cant mill the relevant cards in advance you need to mill them the same turn you activate the ability. Traumatize, Mirror-Mad Phantasm and Morality Shift are all interesting options to massively fill your own graveyard at a moments notice, and I might put my Mimeoplasm deck back together to try this out.

Tameshi Reality Architect Can Recur Both Artifacts And Enchantments

Tameshi, Reality Architect is a creature that can return artifacts or enchantments from the graveyard to the battlefield at the cost of one land, one white mana, and X colorless. This is a lot to pay, but this ability can be activated as many times as its controller wants, though it has to be at sorcery speed.

The other caveat to Tameshi is that it cannot be in a mono-blue deck. Since it has a white mana symbol on the card, it has to be in a deck that has both white and blue in its color identity.

Raiyuu Storm’s Edge Grants A Second Combat Phase

Raiyuu, Storm’s Edge is a white and red creature and a legendary samurai. The samurai creature type, unsurprisingly, received a lot of support from Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. Their theme is once again creatures that attack alone. Raiyuu, Storm’s Edge continues the trend by granting its controller an additional combat phase if they attack with a sole creature while also untapping the attacking creature.

Raiyuu also has first strike, giving it the advantage should it ever be blocked. The samurai of this set could very easily meld with the exalted mechanic of prior sets. Making a deck built around samurai and exalted effects could be a devastating combination.

The best use for the Samurai that Naomi, Pillar of Order creates will be leveraging the triggered ability of Norika Yamazaki, the Poet. You dont necessarily want to send your best Samurai in only to get killed in combat. After youve created a few , Naomi can hang back and watch the sacrificial tokens do the heavy lifting.

Tezzeret Betrayer Of Flesh Is A Major Power

A new version of an old character, Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh is one of the three planeswalkers in this set. Tezzeret is arguably the most powerful for how much it gives to an artifact-focused blue deck. It allows the player to draw two cards at the cost of discarding either an artifact or two cards. It can animate an artifact at 4/4 .

Tezzeret’s ultimate ability allows its controller to draw a card every time they tap an artifact. None of these instantly wins the game, but all of them are a great boon to an artifact deck and can keep it running smoothly.

Kura The Boundless Sky

Speaking of Dragons, Kura is on rate as a flying, deathtouch 4/4. The death trigger is the big thing, and both modes have situational value. I was initially a little dismissive of the first because it didnt put them onto the battlefield, like Seedguide Ash. Then I realized that its any three lands, which sets you up for a classic mana-producing pair like Cabal Coffers and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. It can also give you a protection suite like Yavimaya Hollow, Kor Haven, and Maze of Ith. Maybe its just that Glacial Chasm you need to stay alive. The second mode is one youll want to play in a deck that has some Kura recursion so that you can keep getting big Spirit tokens.

Sheldon Menery flat-out loves Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty for Commander MTG. Which cards made his Top 5 in each color?

Theres been plenty of hype for new Magic sets recently. Then Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty entered the picture and the hype train bulleted into overdrive. From the breathtaking art marrying styles old and new to reflections of cards and characters from Kamigawa block a generation ago, this set has enthralled players everywhere. The cards, dripping with flavor and power, are going to find their ways into lots of Commander decks in the near future. Here, then, is my full set review.

Normally, Id grade each color, plus multicolored and colorless/lands, on an A to F scale. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is so full of wonderful cards that we can throw that right out the window. Theyre all As , with great density and exciting top cards. For each category, Ill pick a few Honorable Mentions, then list a Top 5. Ill go into full detail about those cards in the Top 5. If one of those top cards is one of the legendary creatures I discussed earlier this week, Ill keep the write-up shorter.

Commander First Looks: The Legends of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty

Mechanically, the set has a great deal to offer. Samurai, Ninjas, Shrines, Vehicles, and channel make splashy returns. Sagas are here as transforming DFCs. Modal dies triggers excite me most, especially since theyre on Dragons that are Kamigawa call-backs.

The Reality Chip Gives A Player Access To The Top Card Of Their Library

On its own, the Reality Chip is a 0/4 wall. However, when it is attached to a creature, it becomes a Future Sight-type card. It allows the controller to look at and cast the spells from the top of their library. Unlike many of the other reconfiguring creatures, it doesn’t provide any other benefit or stat boost to the creature.

That said, always having access to the top card of the library is very useful, and there aren’t a lot of cards that allow players to cast any card from the top. Future Sight, Magus of the Future, and Bolas’ Citadel are among the only cards that grant this ability.
