A patio may be just as lovely as a deck, but it also offers more privacy and peace. Eating or resting is possible in this region. Coffee in the morning or an outdoor martini in the evening are the best ways to start the day.

An alternative that is less expensive to build and doesnt usually require any special approvals is a patio. Decks are essential, yet both improve the value of your home, as they may be one of the best modern backyards.

Can You Lay Your Own Patio

One way to cut down on costs is to take care of the labor yourself, and laying a patio is one great example. Sam Norris, garden expert of Garden Street , says, ‘Laying patio down doesn’t need to cost the earth, and in small home spaces, it makes for a great DIY project. All it takes is prep and a bit of dedication!’

He shares some of his tips below:

  • ‘Draw a scale plan of the area before starting any work with exact dimensions. If you do not have tools to cut patio slabs, you may need to work to the size of the patio slabs themselves.’
  • ‘Always ensure the ground is completely flat when dug out, and ideally has good drainage.’
  • ‘Dig to a depth of around 15cm , removing any turf or plants.’
  • ‘Do not lay directly onto the soil lay some hardcore to provide a foundation. This needs to be compacted with a plate compactor and be 48cm deep.’
  • ‘Lay down bedding mortar onto the hardcore again keeping the base completely flat and level.’
  • ‘Use string to act as guides, ensuring that as you lay the patio slabs in line they are completely level.’
  • ‘Leave 1cm between the slabs do not put the slabs next to each other. After 24 hours of laying fill with dry sand or patio grout.’

    Mini Water Feature Entryway

You may not think that you have enough room for a water feature in your yard, but with a little creativity you can add a small fountain virtually anywhere. This small nook between the front door and the garage makes use of an otherwise underutilized space for a pondless fountain. A small pump inside the glazed pot keeps the water circulating. If you have a shaded corner where plants struggle to grow, a small fountain makes a great alternative to a rock garden . This option is also well-suited to homeowners who like the sounds made by a water feature but do not want to care for a pond or large fountain.

Keep plants shorter in front, and taller in back. Here, tall plants help to integrate the porch into the planting design, presenting a single cohesive design.

Framing is a great trick in any landscape style. Here, two Maples lend grandeur by framing both the front gate and front door.

Go flowers go! Cottage gardens are on the rise, characterized by abundant blooms, densely planted flower beds, and long lists of annuals and perennials .

This design packs the flowers in, but sticks to a restrained color palette of mostly shades of pink and lavender, save for a few pops of yellow. Plant heights swoop upward as you approach the front door, helping to stitch the front porch into the overall scene.

Wisely, the path lets the plants hog all the complexity, opting for a clean and simple straight lines that contrast nicely with the billowing fullness of the garden design.

Decorative boulders play a similar trick, looking like they were plucked right from a national park .

15+ Small Backyard Ideas No Grass Gif

A rock garden, also known as a rockery or alpine garden, accentuates various stones, boulders, and pebbles. Small, big, gray, or brown, your rock garden will highlight many shapes, sizes, and color palettes.

Rock gardens help to diversify your yard and create an appealing contrast from the greenery. These gardens are drought-tolerant and low-maintenance, so you wont have to spend lots of money on their care.

Cost: Landscaping rock projects cost an average of $600 to $700. Homeowners may pay between $460 and $1,000 to buy and install rocks, stones, and boulders.

But there are plenty of ways to find free rocks for your rock garden and avoid writing that check.

Large boulders on farms and construction sites are typically a nuisance. Consider asking a farmer or construction worker if they have any rocks they plan to throw away. You may happen to find yourself coming home with a giant, new rock.

Hunting in your yard for small stones is also an excellent way to collect some of your favorites.
