Problem #: Mower Stops While Mowing

When the mower is running, theres no problem. But if it suddenly stops while youre mowing, there could be several reasons.

An overheated engine might cause your Troy Bilt mower to quit while youre in the middle of it. lawnMowers can also stop if theres a problem with the carburetor, fuel tank, or air filter. This is general troy bilt riding mower transmission problems.

How A Riding Lawn Mower Is Powered

Riding mower is powered by a four-cycle engine . Some mowers use gasoline as their fuel and a spark plug to combust it. Others are powered by diesel and require no spark plug. In either case, the engine runs the transmission and drive wheels, and rotates the cutting blades underneath the machine.

Like automobile car, riding mower requires to charge a battery, starter motor, and ignition switch. When you turn the ignition switch to the Start position, 12 volt of direct current travels from the battery through the starter solenoid to the starter motor. This current also flows through a cable to the anti-afterfire solenoid in the engine

When you release the key to the Run position, this DC of twelve volts is then redirected. Instead of going to the starter and motor, it moves to the alternator and anti-afterfire solenoid only. Together, these parts help to charge the battery and start auxiliary power sources like headlights and power plugs.

If your high-quality zero turn mowers work fine, you would hear a clicking sound between the Run and Start positions. This implies that the starter solenoid is getting power from the battery. On the other hand, when you dont hear a click from the engine, the starter has failed, or its coil isnt getting power from the battery.

Although mowers differ from models, they all work on the same principles.

Check And Charge/replace Dead Battery

Best rear engine riding mower: Complete buying guide

Battery troubles are one of the most common reasons a mower wont run or click. A corroded battery wont start an engine, and neither will a drained battery, when you forget to turn off the safety switch. Corrosion can be a usual problem for used riding lawn mower models at cheap prices of $500 below, so make sure to check this when you buy one.

A service monitor on a mower can help you identify when youve got battery troubles. But without one, you can check the battery using a multi-meter by following these steps:

  • Turn off the ignition system before accessing the battery.
  • Set the multimeter to DC voltage
  • Use the multi-meter’s red probe to touch the positive terminal and the black probe on the negative terminal.

If the multitester reads more than twelve volts, the battery is good. Otherwise, it is weak, or dead and youve found the problem with your mower.

  • Accessing the battery, which is usually under the driver’s seat.
  • Connecting the charger clips to the battery terminals.
  • Plugging the charger to a power outlet. The charger should work on at least 10volts to charge the battery. Still, a 12-volt charger is sometimes preferred.
  • Disconnecting the charger reversing the steps above.
  • Plugging the charger to a power outlet. The charger should work on at least 10volts to charge the battery. Still, a 12-volt charger is sometimes preferred.
  • Replacing the seat and reconnecting the new battery in your mower correctly.

How To Fix A Flooded Troy

Troy

Troy-Bilt riding lawn mowers such as the Pony model have carburetors that can become flooded with gasoline when starting. A flooded riding mower will typically not start, and basic troubleshooting is necessary to return the mower to normal operation. In most cases, you can correct the problem without the need for professional servicing.

  • 1.

Locate the throttle lever on the dash of the Troy-Bilt riding mower. Move the throttle up to the “Fast” position. Make sure the power take off or blade engagement is in the “Off” position and set the parking brake.

  • 2.

Turn the ignition key clockwise or to the right until you feel resistance and attempt to start the mower. Repeat the process to attempt to start the mower if it does not start the first time. Do not hold the ignition in the start position for more than 10 seconds to prevent damage to the starter.

  • 3.

Move the throttle control to the “Slow” setting and let the mower set for 15 minutes to allow gas in the carburetor to evaporate, if the mower will not start.

  • 4.

Return to the mower, move the throttle to the “Fast” setting and turn the key to start the mower. Move the throttle to the desired throttle setting once the mower starts.

Electric Start Wont Start Just Clicking

I have a brand new mower. Charged it for 10 hours it wont start just clicking!

Does the mower start when you pull the rope? If so, then your electric starter is bad. You need to take it back to the store for repair or replacement.

Even if the mower won’t start when you pull the rope, since the mower is brand new, take it back to the store for repair or replacement.

I have the same issue, except I’ve had it for a couple of years. Mine recently started misbehaving and not shutting off when blade control handle was let go, and took me pushing the little metal switch thingy on the mower in. I recently fixed that, and electric start worked for a bit, and then suddenly it wouldn’t start anymore. So I bought a new off brand mower only to have it suddenly start running slow, and it’s self propel quit working. It of course has an engine that needs primed . Then I managed to fix the mower after discovering the ground wire was half broken, so I redid the ground wire And replaced the cover and lo and behold it started but then later on electric start stopped working at some point. It still starts with the the pull cord, but also it will sometimes spit black exhaust out when starting. Not a lot, but once it gets up to speed meaning the engine, no color to exhaust which is good. But when you shut it off it smells strongly of fuel. I’ve done carb cleaner and fuel treatment and it runs better, but still does the black exhaust.

Step 2 Remove The Carburetor From The Mower:

In Troy Bilt riding mowers, taking off the carburetor is less easy than in a Troy Bilt walk-behind mower. For the disassembly, the following steps have been mentioned:

Step 1. Detach the cables of the battery:

Remove the key if it is in the ignition switch. Before removing the carburetor, you first need to make sure that the battery is not attached, which could cause the Troy Bilt mower to start. To do this, you can raise the mower seat under which the battery is placed and disconnect one of its terminals.

-Step 2. Remove the housing of the engine blower:

You need to remove the mower hood to reach the carburetor. The following sections shall be located under the hood, which needs to be removed.

    • Air duct: Just under the hood, the air duct directs the air to the air filter. Remove the air duct screws and remove the duct from the mower.
    • Air filter assembly: The whole air filter assembly that consists of the air filter cover, the air filter housing, and the filter needs to be removed. First, take off the air filter cover, then the air filter, and finally the air filter housing by loosening the screws.
    • Blower housing: Blower housing is another component that needs to be removed. You should loosen the screws on the front and back of it to make sure it stays off.

-Step 3. Detach the lines of air and fuel:

    -Step 4. Remove the carburetor:

What To Do When Your Engine Turns Over But Wont Start

Inspect the engine throttle choke and control to make sure it is positioned correctly.

Make sure you have gasoline in your tank also check to make sure the fuel line and fuel filter arent clogged with dirt or debris. If youre unsure, replace your fuel filter.

Look to make sure the spark plug wire hasnt disconnected replace the spark plug with another one.

    Step 3 Clean The Carburetor:

Problems with Troy Bilt Pony Riding Lawn Mower

The carburetor removed is now to be serviced. You should follow the steps mentioned:

Step 1. Carry out external cleaning:

Externally, you could see the carburetor jets along with the throttle shaft. Use a carburetor cleaner spray on the throttle shaft and the visible jets from the outside to clean them. Make sure the black residues are removed and the shaft rotates freely. Clear any deposits you see on the outside by spraying the cleaner continuously.

-Step 2. Clean the main jet:

Remove the bowl nut under the carburetor. The nut is the main jet that supports the bowl, which extracts fuel and has the greatest risk of being congested. Using a thin metal wire, clear these deposits and ensure that the jet is cleared from any debris. Also, spray the jet with a little carb cleaner.

When you see the mist of the cleaner coming out of the other end, you know its unblocked. Normally, the bowl is quite dirty with debris, rust, and deposits. Spray the cleaner on the bowl as well.

Step 3. Clean the needle and the float:

After the bowl has been removed, the needle and float are visible. The float regulates the volume of fuel with the help of the needle.

Spray the cleaner onto the float pin that may be sticky with the clogs and the needle. Make sure it is clean and the deposits have been dislodged.

After cleaning, reassemble the carburetor components such as the float, needle, bowl, and bowl nut.

What To Do If The Mower Engine Turns Over But Doesnt Start

So, lets say you have done your troubleshooting above and the engine turns over, yet wont start. There is further troubleshooting to be done to help find and solve the issue. Follow the first step above and ensure that the parking brake is on and the cut deck is engaged. Then, you are ready to move on to the next step.

  • Engine throttle choke. Start by inspecting the engine throttle choke and control. Sometimes it can get lodged out of position and prevent the engine from starting. Make sure that it is positioned properly before moving on to the next step.
  • Do you have gas? There is a saying that the simplest explanation is usually the right one. It happens more often than you would think but running out of gas is a very real possibility. Check to ensure that you have gas in the tank and fill it up if you do not.
  • Check the fuel line and filter. While you are checking to see if you have gas, check the fuel line and filter. Sometimes, either or both can get clogged up with debris, dust, and dirt. If you arent 100% certain, consider replacing the fuel filter just to be safe.
  • Spark plug. There are times where the spark plug can be disconnected or failing, not delivering the necessary spark needed to get the engine going. Verify that the spark plug is connected. You may want to consider replacing it anyway this is a relatively cheap fix.
